Frequently asked questions

What is Taiyaku?

Taiyaku is an AI translation service for reading web pages, PDFs, video subtitles and audio side by side with the original. Each translation sits right under or beside its source paragraph, so you can compare as you read. Use it on this site for text, PDF and web page translation, and with the Chrome & Safari extension.

Is Taiyaku free?

Taiyaku has a free plan with 30,000 characters of web and text translation, 20 PDF pages and 10 minutes of audio translation a month once you verify your email. The paid Basic (¥980/month) and Pro (¥1,980/month) plans raise the limits and add automatic knowledge cards and 2–3 languages at once (prices in JPY, tax included). You can also try it without signing up: up to 20,000 characters of text and 2 PDF pages.

How is Taiyaku different from typical machine translation?

Taiyaku is built for reading with the original in view: translations appear right under or beside the source text, so you can check the nuance as you read. Names of people, organizations and places get knowledge cards with their reading and a short explanation, PDFs are shown side by side, and videos get bilingual subtitles.

Can Taiyaku translate PDFs?

Taiyaku's PDF translator opens a PDF in your browser and shows each page next to its translation. You can translate only the pages you need and download the result as bilingual HTML (free plan: 20 pages a month, files up to 10 MB).

Can Taiyaku show YouTube subtitles in two languages?

With the Taiyaku extension, YouTube and other videos show the original and translated subtitles together, with adjustable size and position, even in full screen. For streams and webinars without subtitles, tab audio translation (Chrome) shows the translation as captions.

Which browsers does Taiyaku support?

The Taiyaku extension supports Google Chrome (and Chromium browsers such as Edge) and Safari on macOS. Text, PDF and web page translation on this site work in any modern browser.

Which languages does Taiyaku support?

Taiyaku supports 16 languages: Japanese, English, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Korean, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Arabic, Hindi. The source language is detected automatically.

Does Taiyaku only translate between Japanese and English?

Taiyaku translates between any of its 16 languages, not just Japanese and English. Paid plans can show translations into 2–3 languages at once under the original.

Does Taiyaku use my text to train AI?

Taiyaku does not use the content you send for translation, or its translations, to train AI models, and the AI providers it uses are bound by terms or settings that keep the data out of training. Text and PDF history is deleted automatically after 7 days to 1 year depending on your plan, and web page, subtitle and audio translations after 24 hours.

Can I cancel Taiyaku anytime?

You can cancel a Taiyaku plan anytime from “Manage billing” in your account settings and keep using it until the end of the paid period.

What are Taiyaku's knowledge cards?

Taiyaku's knowledge cards show the reading and a short explanation for people, organizations, places and works in the text. On Basic and above they appear automatically while translating; on the free plan you can look up selected terms up to 30 times a month.
