Translate PDFs

You can translate a PDF with the PDF translator on this site or with the extension’s PDF viewer. Both show each page next to its translation.

On the web

  1. Open the PDF translator and drop a PDF, or click “Choose a file”.
  2. With “Translate pages as they appear” on, pages are translated as you reach them. To translate only the pages you need, turn it off and click “Translate this page” on each.
  3. Switch between “Bilingual” and “Translation only”.
  4. Click “Download bilingual HTML” to save the translated pages.

The file is read in your browser and only the text needed for translation is sent. Files can be up to 5 MB on the free plan.

In the extension’s PDF viewer

  1. Open a PDF in your browser. “Read bilingually in Taiyaku” appears at the bottom right; click it to open the PDF viewer.
  2. If it doesn’t appear, click the 訳 button in the toolbar, then “Translate this PDF”.
  3. Pages are translated starting with the one on screen.

For a PDF on your computer, click “Open a PDF” in the 訳 toolbar panel, then choose it with “Open file” or drop it on the viewer.

In Chrome, “Read bilingually in Taiyaku” only appears once you allow access to all websites. Open the viewer from the 訳 toolbar button instead.

View modes

In the PDF viewer, switch between three view modes in the toolbar.

  • “Side by side” shows the original page and its translation next to each other.
  • “Original layout” lays each paragraph’s translation over the page, in the original paragraph’s place. Figures, tables and the page design stay as they are; hover a block to see the original text.
  • “Translation only” shows the translation as continuous text.

The PDF translator on the web offers “Bilingual” and “Translation only”.

Save the bilingual version

On the web and in the PDF viewer, “Bilingual HTML” downloads an HTML file with the original and the translation side by side, to read in a browser or print.

If some pages aren’t translated yet, the PDF viewer asks whether to translate them all first or to save only the translated pages.

What can’t be translated, and usage

  • Pages without readable text, such as scanned image-only pages, can’t be translated.
  • Password-protected PDFs open in the PDF viewer once you enter the password.
  • Translated pages count toward this month’s PDF pages (20 a month on the free plan).
