Look up names with knowledge cards
When an unfamiliar name comes up, a knowledge card tells you how to read it and what it is. Explanations draw on Wikipedia.
What knowledge cards are
People, organizations, places, products, works and events get a dotted underline. Hover (or tap on a phone) to open the card: the type, the name with its reading, a two-to-three-line key point and a link to Wikipedia.
Terms are underlined in both the original and the translation.
Automatic cards (Basic and above)
On Basic and Pro, names are detected while translating and get their underline and card automatically.
Knowledge cards are on by default. To switch them, use “Knowledge cards” in the 訳 toolbar panel of the extension, or in the text translator on the web. The setting is saved to your account and also applies to PDF translation and your other browsers.
Look up a selected term (every plan)
On the free plan you can still look up terms you select (30 a month).
Extension
Select a short term on the page and press the 訳 stamp. Its reading and explanation appear under “Knowledge card”.
Web
Select a term in the original or the translation and click “Look up in knowledge cards”.
Lookups count toward this month’s knowledge-card lookups. See your usage in account settings.
Your data
To write the explanation, our server looks up only the terms themselves (such as names) in Wikipedia — never the full text or anything that identifies you. Card images are loaded by your browser directly from Wikimedia’s servers (external transmission).
