Troubleshooting

Most problems are solved by allowing website access or reloading the page. Go through these in order.

Safari: allow access to websites

In Safari, you decide in Safari Settings which websites the extension may use. On sites without access, the ribbon and stamp don’t appear and pages can’t be translated.

  1. Choose Safari > Settings… in the menu bar.
  2. Click Extensions and select Taiyaku.
  3. Click “Edit Websites…” and set “Other websites” to Allow.

If the checkbox next to Taiyaku is off, turn it on.

Chrome: allow it on all websites

Right after you add the extension, Chrome doesn’t let it run on every site. Until you allow it, you can still translate a page from the 訳 toolbar button, Alt + A or the right-click menu, but the stamp, PDF detection and video subtitles (except on YouTube) don’t start on their own.

  1. Click the 訳 button in the toolbar.
  2. Under “Allow Taiyaku on all websites”, click “Allow”.
  3. Allow it in Chrome’s prompt.

If you declined the prompt, click “Allow” again to see it again.

A page isn’t translated

  • Browser pages and extension stores can’t be translated by any extension.
  • Pages that were open before you added or updated the extension need a reload.
  • On sites under “Never translate”, the ribbon and stamp are hidden and nothing is translated automatically. Check Settings › Site rules.
  • PDFs shown by the browser are translated in the PDF viewer, not as a page.
  • Nothing is translated while you’re logged out or after you reach this month’s limit. The 訳 toolbar button shows your status.

Shortcuts don’t work

These are the default shortcuts. On a Mac, press Option instead of Alt.

Alt + ATranslate page / show original
Alt + STranslate selected text
EscClose cards and popovers
  • If another extension uses the same keys, Taiyaku’s shortcut may be left unset. Check that it doesn’t say “Not set” under Settings › Shortcuts.
  • In Chrome, change the keys from “Open shortcut settings” under Settings › Shortcuts.
  • Safari doesn’t allow changing extension shortcuts.

The stamp or ribbon doesn’t appear

  • Check that “Shiori bookmark” and “Selection stamp” are on under Settings › Translation › Features.
  • The extension needs access to all websites in Chrome, or website access in Safari.
  • The ribbon is hidden while a video plays in full screen.
