Display styles, furigana and glossaries

Choose how translations are shown and worded to suit the way you read. Settings made in the extension are saved to your account and follow you to other browsers and the web app.

Display styles

Switch styles under “Display style” in the 訳 toolbar panel, or in the ribbon panel.

  • Thread (default) shows the translation under each paragraph, tied with a thin indigo thread.
  • Washi card places each translation on a soft, paper-like card.
  • Study mode keeps translations blurred until you hover — good for language learning.
  • Subtle shows a quieter, smaller translation with a dashed underline.
  • Translation only hides the original and shows only the translation; hover to see the original.

Tone

Under Settings › Translation › Tone, choose the voice of your translations. For a selection, switch it in the card each time.

  • Natural: readable translations that follow the tone of the original.
  • Formal: polite, business-ready wording.
  • Casual: relaxed wording that suits social posts and chat.

Furigana (Basic and above)

Adds readings above difficult kanji in Japanese translations — handy when you’re learning Japanese.

  1. In the extension, turn on “Furigana” under Settings › Translation › Features.
  2. On the web, turn on “Furigana” in the text translator.

Furigana are added to text translated into Japanese, not to Japanese originals.

Glossaries (Pro)

Save how names, product names and terms should be translated. Create glossaries under “Glossaries” in the extension’s settings.

  1. Click “New glossary”, name it and choose the From and To languages.
  2. Enter the Source, the Translation and an optional Note, then add it.
  3. Import many terms at once from a CSV file with three columns — source, target, note (up to 2 MB) — and save them with “Export CSV”.

Saved terms are used automatically whenever you translate into that language: pages, selections, PDFs and subtitles alike. A glossary for a specific source language takes priority over an “Auto-detect” one.

Other settings

  • “Translate from”: “Detect” works for almost every page.
  • “Theme”: Light, Dark or System.
  • “Display language”: the language of the extension and of the emails we send you.

Open the settings from the gear icon (Settings) in the 訳 toolbar panel.
