Install and set up the extension

With the extension, the page you’re reading turns bilingual right where it is. Setup takes about a minute.

Supported browsers

The Taiyaku extension (Safari version coming soon) works in Google Chrome (and Chromium browsers such as Microsoft Edge) and in Safari on the Mac. You need a free Taiyaku account.

Without the extension you can still use the text translator, PDF translator and web page translator on this site.

Add it to Chrome

  1. Open Taiyaku in the Chrome Web Store and click “Add to Chrome”.
  2. Confirm that you want to add the extension.
  3. Setup opens automatically. Follow it through “Websites”, “Toolbar”, “Account” and “Language”.

If Chrome’s Enhanced protection is on, it may show “Proceed with caution” when you add the extension. Chrome shows this for extensions from new developers; it doesn’t mean anything is wrong with Taiyaku. Click “Continue to install” to add it.

Add it to Safari

  1. Get Taiyaku from the Mac App Store.
  2. Open the Taiyaku app and click “Quit and Open Safari Settings…”.
  3. In Safari Settings, open Extensions and turn on the checkbox next to Taiyaku.
  4. When setup opens, follow the steps on screen.

Allow access to websites

To translate a page or a selection, the extension needs to read the page you’re viewing. Allow it on all websites in the “Websites” step of setup.

Chrome

  1. Click “Allow on all websites”.
  2. Allow it in Chrome’s prompt.

Without it, you can still translate a page from the 訳 button in the toolbar. Allow it so the selection stamp, PDF detection and video subtitles work on every site automatically. To allow it later, click the 訳 button in the toolbar, then “Allow”.

Safari

In Safari, access is set in Safari Settings.

  1. Choose Safari > Settings… in the menu bar, then click Extensions.
  2. Select Taiyaku and click “Edit Websites…”.
  3. Set “Other websites” to Allow.

Pin it to the toolbar

With the 訳 button in your toolbar, any page is one click away from bilingual.

Chrome

  1. Click the Extensions button (the puzzle piece) in the toolbar.
  2. Click the pin next to Taiyaku in the list.
  3. The 訳 button now sits in your toolbar.

Safari

The 訳 button usually appears in the toolbar on its own. If it doesn’t, add it like this.

  1. Choose View > Customize Toolbar… in the menu bar.
  2. Drag the Taiyaku button into the toolbar, then click Done.

Sign in and choose your language

  1. In the “Account” step, sign up or log in with your email, Google, Apple, Yahoo! JAPAN ID or LINE.
  2. In the “Language” step, pick the language you want to read in, and the display style for translations.
  3. In “How to use”, click “Open the sample page” to open a Wikipedia article in a new tab and translate it.

If you signed up with email, open the link in the email we sent you. Verifying raises your free allowance to 30,000 characters a month.

If you skipped setup, you can log in from the 訳 button in the toolbar at any time. Change your language and other settings from the gear icon (Settings) in the same panel.
