Bilingual subtitles for YouTube and other videos

On videos with subtitles, the extension shows the original and the translation as two lines at once. It works on the free plan.

On YouTube

  1. Open a YouTube video that has subtitles (auto-generated ones count).
  2. Click the 訳 button in the player’s lower right, next to the subtitles button.
  3. Two-line subtitles appear: the original and the translation. Click 訳 again to go back to the regular subtitles.

Taiyaku picks the subtitles in the video’s original language (or the auto-generated ones) and translates them. Once you turn it on, other videos with subtitles get bilingual subtitles automatically. It works in full screen too.

In Chrome, bilingual YouTube subtitles work even before you allow access to all websites.

Videos on other sites

Videos on other sites that carry subtitle tracks are translated too. Hover over the video to see the 訳 button at its top right. In Chrome, this needs access to all websites.

Adjust the subtitles

“Subtitle translation” in the 訳 toolbar panel turns subtitle translation on or off everywhere. Under Settings › Subtitles you can change:

  • “Show the original line”: turn it off to show only the translation.
  • “Put the translation on top”: show the translation above the original.
  • “Position”: show subtitles at the bottom or the top of the video.
  • “Text size”: make subtitles larger or smaller.

If subtitles don’t appear

  • Videos without subtitles can’t be translated this way. In Chrome, try audio translation, which listens to the tab.
  • Subtitles of live streams aren’t translated.
  • Subtitles already in your target language aren’t translated.
  • If the subtitles couldn’t be loaded, reload the page and try again.

Subtitle translation counts toward this month’s characters. Only the part around what you play is translated, so you’re only charged for what you watch.
